Santana initially rejected the offer to be in the coven, not wanted to be lead by anyone. When her best friend Brittany happily excepted her place in the coven. Santana doesn’t like having to answer to the coven, the teachers or the leader but her fear of being abandoned by the coven and her best friend with them keeps her grounded

Though they are not the strongest, the are the wealthiest family within the witches community often donating large sums of money to the school annually. Judy, Quinn’s mother, always bore some hostility towards the strong girls in the coven. She wanted her daughter to be the leader in everything she does. Quinn knows this, and feels suffocated by the pressure that her mother puts on her to be perfect. In the beginning, Quinn found it hard to bond with the girls. She felt the need to compete with Caroline to be the most beautiful, Diana to be the smartest and Bonnie to be the strongest. As the years passed Quinn’s struggle with her family broke her down. It was only then, as the girls stood with her that she finally learned the value of the coven.

Let me fix this:

Not to invalidate anyone’s experience with low self-esteem but I have a problem with a conventionally attractive white girl who fits the standard of beauty singing a song written by three black women. Like, yes, feeling unpretty and struggling with self-esteem is a pretty universal experiences regardless of your race but having this specific song sung by a white woman erases the experiences that WOC go through when it comes to dealing with the white standard of beauty. It’s a totally different experience than what white women go through and it upsets me that an image of someone who isn’t T-Boz, Left-Eye and Chilli singing this song has so many goddamn notes when I can’t even FIND a decent gif of TLC singing this song.

Again, you can relate to this song if you’re white; it’s just that when a white woman is singing it, it erases an entire level of experiences that white women never go through. And that’s messed up.

No. Just no. Even pretty girls can feel insecure and THAT is what this song is about. Just because three Black girl are singing it doesn’t mean it’s about race. You need to see past that. It shouldn’t not matter if the person singing it is white or black or any other color. All women go through the same things and we band together because of it. If you relate to this song because of the color of of the person singing it then something is wrong. Women are not diced up into little groups we are all one. The moment that you put a woman in a different group because she is not ethnic, you contribute to racial tension because you are alienating her. If you have a problem with the “white standard of beauty” then don’t leave a girl out because she fits into it. Just because Quinn is pretty didn’t mean that she never had problems. She didn’t ask to be born looking the way she does, none of us do. And while we think she’s lucky because she’s pretty and nothing bad happens to her, she has to deal with being victimized by men who only want her for her looks. When she enters the work place men in higher posts will try to blackmail her or hold her job over her head because they want to sleep with her. Girls who don’t took as beautiful with hate her and be mean to her because and even girl who say they are her friends still hate her because they are competing to be better. She has it just as hard as everyone else because she is a woman. Not because of her size, looks or skin color. That is bullshit to say that it takes away from the songs meaning if any thing it gives it more meaning because it links all women together because we are all equal. If anything, being pretty makes it hard for her because society will judge her as stuck up and snobby before even getting to know who she really is. THAT is what this song is about. When you say that you are giving one race ore importance than another when race should mean nothing.

Because seriously, you’re pulling the “as women we ALL have the same experiences” and “color doesn’t matter” and “when you talk about race YOU are the racist” crap.

No. Not all women have the same experiences in this regard. I JUST said that in what I originally blogged. WOC have the added issue of dealing with white women being seen as the epitome of beauty. That is something that white women don’t have to deal with, ever, period.

I don’t give a shit about this fictional white girl’s problems. I never said that “if you’re white you don’t have problems”. I said that if you’re white you don’t experience things the same way POC do. And that’s the truth because white women have white privilege, end of story.
